Primer

The primer serves to protect against corrosion and promote adhesion to the substrate (e.g., steel). It is the first layer of a coating system and must be formulated to ensure optimal adhesion to the surface and a reliable base for subsequent layers. Its pigmentation (e.g., zinc dust, zinc phosphate, or other active corrosion-inhibiting pigments) gives it its essential protective function.
